When your AC breaker keeps tripping, it’s more than just an inconvenience, it’s a warning sign that something isn’t working right in your system. As an HVAC professional with years in the field, we can tell you that repeated breaker trips are not something to ignore. Left unchecked, they can lead to bigger (and more expensive) issues or even pose a safety hazard.

So, what’s causing the problem? And more importantly, how can you fix it? Let’s break it down.

What It Means When Your AC Breaker Trips

Your air conditioner has a dedicated circuit breaker designed to cut power if the system pulls in too much electrical current. This is a safety mechanism that protects your system from damage and helps prevent electrical fires.

But if that breaker is constantly tripping, it’s a sign that your AC is overloading the circuit, malfunctioning, or encountering a deeper issue.

Common Reasons Your AC Breaker Keeps Tripping

Here are some of the most frequent culprits I’ve seen over the years:

1. Dirty Air Filter

A clogged air filter makes your AC work harder than it should, reducing airflow and causing the blower motor to overheat. This can lead to a breaker trip. Always start by checking and replacing your filter, it’s the simplest fix with the biggest impact.

2. Frozen Evaporator Coils

When the evaporator coils freeze up, often due to restricted airflow or low refrigerant, your AC has to draw more power to function. This extra strain can trip the breaker. If you see ice on the coils or notice reduced cooling, turn off the system and call a pro.

3. Refrigerant Issues (Low or Leaking)

Low refrigerant levels force your system to overcompensate. Not only can this cause the breaker to trip, but it can also damage your compressor over time. A licensed HVAC tech should inspect and recharge the system, and find the source of any leaks.

4. Faulty Capacitor

The capacitor is what helps your AC motor start and run efficiently. When it fails, the system may struggle to start or draw excess current, tripping the breaker. A faulty capacitor should be replaced immediately by a professional.

5. Compressor Problems

The compressor is the heart of your AC system. If it’s going bad, it can pull in too much power and cause a trip. Unfortunately, this is a serious issue, and replacing a compressor can be costly. It’s important to catch this early with a proper diagnosis.

6. Loose or Damaged Wiring

Over time, connections can become loose or corroded, and wires can fray. Damaged wiring can cause shorts, leading to breaker trips and potential fire hazards. This is definitely not a DIY job, get a licensed technician to inspect it safely.

7. An Undersized Breaker or Panel Issues

Sometimes, the problem isn’t with the AC unit itself. If the breaker or electrical panel isn’t sized properly for your system’s demands, it can trip under normal operation. This requires an electrician or HVAC technician to evaluate and upgrade as needed.

What to Do When Your AC Breaker Trips

Before calling a professional, here’s what you can try:

  • Turn off the AC at the thermostat.
  • Check and replace the air filter.
  • Reset the breaker at the electrical panel.
  • Turn the AC back on and monitor it.

If it trips again right away or continues to trip frequently, it’s time to call in a professional. Repeatedly flipping the breaker back on without fixing the root issue can damage your unit and even pose a safety risk.
